Conference on Adult Education
The Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI), hosted by the Government of Brazil in Belém from 1 to 4 December 2009, will provide an important platform for policy dialogue and advocacy on adult learning and non-formal education at global level.
The conference will draw together UNESCO Member States, United Nations agencies, multi- and bi-lateral cooperation agencies, organisations from civil society, the private sector and learners from all world regions.
Deeply concerned about the global public health risks posed by the developments of the H1N1 virus, the Government of Brazil and UNESCO decided in early May to postpone the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI), originally scheduled to take place in Belém do Pará from 19th to 22nd May 2009.
The Government of Brazil and UNESCO have, however, both remained totally committed to holding CONFINTEA VI before the end of the current year and to take all the necessary measures to guarantee the success of the event. After consulting all key stakeholders, it has been decided to hold CONFINTEA VI from 1st to 4th December in Belém. The city of Belém has been confirmed as the venue for the Conference as it offers all the necessary conditions. Health surveillance and coverage at the entry points in Brazil and to Belém will be guaranteed by the Host Country.
It has been confirmed by the Government of Brazil that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will take part in the Conference.
The Government of Brazil and UNESCO would like to acknowledge the commitment of the Governments of the State of Pará and the City of Belém as well as the worldwide dedication of all partners in education and look forward to welcoming you in Belém from 1st to 4th December 2009.
Invitations previously issued by UNESCO remain valid. The CONFINTEA VI Secretariat will contact all invitees for re-confirmation.
