Fredensborg exhibitions

Exhibitions and other activities have been organized on the three continents comprising the route of the Fredensborg and her final voyage.

Fort Frederik Museum, St. Croix

A compact, permanent Fredensborg exhibition has been mounted at the Fort Frederik Museum in Frederiksted on St. Croix, with assistance from the St. Croix Landmarks Society. This was Norway`s gift to the 150th Anniversary Emancipation Celebration, 3 July 1998.

The National Museum, Accra, Ghana

A similar exhibition was presented as a gift from Norway to Ghana on 16 February 1999. The exhibition is on permanent display at the National Museum on Barnes Road, Accra.

A travelling exhibition in Scandinavia

The Norwegian Maritime Museum has, together with Leif Svalesen, initiated an information project with a large travelling exhibition based on finds from the Fredensborg. The exhibition has been enthusiastically received in Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

The Aust-Agder Regional Center for Museum and Archives

At the Aust-Agder Regional Center for Museum and Archives you will find the original travelling exhibition, now as the permanent exhibition "Carrying slaves, ivory and gold", dedicated to the frigate Fredensborg`s last voyage in the triangular trade. This is the main exhibition, situated in the same area in South Norway where the Fredensborg was wrecked 1768.

Norwegian Maritime Museum, Oslo, Norway

A permanent limited Fredensborg exhibition is also mounted on the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo. NORAD (The Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation) has made important conbribution to UNESCO`s Slave Route Project. Among other things this has made possible the exhibitions on St. Croix and Ghana and the billboard and information plaques.

After the opening of the exhibition in Ghana the Akwamu (the Akwamu was a state set up by the Akan people in Ghana which existed in the 1600s and 1700s) arranged a splendid and memorable durbar (an annual festival celebrated in several cities of Nigeria) in Akwamufie for the UNESCO Fredensborg Team. In the middle of the picture we see the Paramount Chief, Otumfuo Ansah Sasraku VI, with central representatives of the Akwamu people and other Ghanians. Among others are visitors from Norway, St. Croix and France.
